FUBAR 40K Game At The Harrogate Wargames Club

At the moment I'm re-reading one of my favourite sci-fi series of all time, the Gaunts Ghosts omnibus edition by Dan Abnett.  Of course reading about the Warhammer 40K universe prompts an itch to dig out my 40K figures and have a game.  The problem though is the Gameswork Shop 40k rule set which is not at all liked by myself or my gaming group at the Harrogate Wargames Club.  As a comprise I suggested we use the expanded version of the FUBAR rules I've blogged about before and a 40K supplement I found on the web.  Accordingly we had a game a couple of weeks back with myself acting as the Umpire.

Playing on our usual 8' x 8' table an Imperial force comprising 2 x squads of 5 Space Marines and a squad of Imperial Guard (10 strong) entered in one corner and the forces of Chaos in the shape of 2 Ork squads (12 each) and 2 squads of Grots Snotlings (10 each) at the opposite.  Both sides moved forward and got set into each other and it quickly became apparent that the Space Marines had a significant qualitative advantage in-spite of their small numbers.  Both sides fed reinforcements in in the form of heavier units including a 3 man unit of Imperial Terminators which teleported down but using a random dice not into a great spot! LOL.  Undaunted however they climbed onto a building and opened up with their Heavy Bolters.  This was an interesting moment for they almost wasted an entire Orc squad in one round of firing.  This generated lots of banter round the table and a last ditch effort by the underpowered Orc team to try and kill some more Marines.  At this point we ran out of time, but notwithstanding this the game was judged to have been a great success.  Easy to pick up rules that gave a reasonable result without too much stress made a for a good evenings wargaming entertainment :)

Warhammer Historical Closes

Just heard today that Warhammer Historical (part of Games Workshop) has closed down, which presumably means that Warhammer Ancient Battles (WAB) as a rule set is no longer supported :(

New GW Boxed Game - Dreadfleet

Whilst over visiting family is Crewe, I popped into the local GW shop. After fending off the store assistant three times who wouldn't take 'I'm just browsing thanks' as an answer to his questions over whether I needed help, I was drawn to their latest 'limited production run' offering. At £70 Dreadfleet is not a cheap game to buy, however the models are fabulous and the production values of the rule book and other elements are very high. Although its pitched at a 12+ age group a quick flick through the rule book convinced me that my 9 year old could manage to play it (in some form), so it was out with the credit card :) Just ploughing through the rule book at the moment. Poll - Is a Games Workshop Finecast resin figure good value for money at £10 ?

Two days ago I blogged about the new Games Workshop (GW) resin (not plastic as I posted) Finecast figures. I'm not a GW hater, I've bought loads of their figures over the years, but I feel that at £10 per figure these are outrageously overpriced. Anyway, chatting to my old friend John Elwen last night, he mentioned that there was comment about the new resin figures in the GW 2011 Annual Report. So after walking my dog, I went in search on the net, and found the report in question and the commentary, elements of which I reproduce here from Page 4:

"Compared to their metal cousins resin models are far easier to assemble, are lighter and less prone to chipping and are much easier to convert with a hobby knife and superglue. Crucially, resin miniatures provide a much higher level of detail for the customer. The reaction of customers and staff to Citadel Finecast has been overwhelmingly positive."

Personally I'm not convinced by the PR guff in the report. My own experience of resin being that small pieces with fine detail are notoriously brittle and susceptible to damage. Anyway, I have started a Poll which I will leave open for a month.
The exam question is 'Do you think £10 for a GW single Finecast resin figure is good value for money ?'
Please vote, I'm interested to see whether I'm totally out of touch on this one.

Games Workshop - Unimpressed

Yesterday my son and I visited our local Games Workshop in Peterborough and picked up a Tau Empire Battleforce box set.
It's quite a while since I've been in there, and I must confess I was slightly shocked at the prices they are now charging, and surprised that they have now done away with all the individual blistered metal figures. I thought the single plastic figured blisters that have replaced them were outrageously priced at £10. V unimpressed...
