BEAMSTRIKE RULES & SUPPLEMENTS

I have a great affection for the Beamstrike sci-fi rules (which I contributed to).  They are described as:  "Beamstrike', a free, open source miniatures wargame developed for 15mm Science fiction figures. Inspired by 'Imperial Commander', Beamstrike rules are comprehensive, yet fast moving, there are ample examples of weapon systems, vehicles and equipment. You can use the background universe provided, yet the rules are generic enough to be used in your favourite science fiction setting."

Sadly with the demise of the Yahoo groups and the disappearance of the wed page that the author Neil Copper used to have, it is now difficult to locate all the supplements that were created.  I have decided to remedy that by uploading all the Beamstrike files into dropbox so they are downloadable :)
#1   Core Rules - version 1.22 - author Neil Cooper.
#2   Quick Reference Sheet - version 1-2
#3   Alien Supplement - version 1.2 - authors  Neil Cooper and Din Clarke,.
#4   Imperial Era Supplement No 1 - author Neil Cooper.
#5   Star Wars Conversion - author Neil Cooper.
#6   Urban War  (draft version) - author Neil Cooper.
#7   Counters & Templates.
#8   Turn Monitor Sheet.
#9   Army Record Sheet.
#10  Visual Record 1.

If you are looking for an alternative set of 15mm Sci-Fi rules, Fubar Sci-Fi Expanded are worth a try, they are currently my rule set of choice.

Stargrunt II - 15mm Sci-Fi - 'Supply Column Hit'

Played a game of 15mm sci-fi using the Stargrunt II rules at the club on Thursday night, our fourth SG2 game in a row.  This was a follow-on to a game the previous week (one that I've yet to add to the blog).

SCENARIO
Planet:                  Rimstone
Location:              Outer Periphery
Date:                     Terra Year 2250 May 4th
Scenario Name:    'Supply Column Hit'

Scenario Setting:
Battlegroup Elwen having failed last week to secure Ambassador Lauralie from a downed dropship have been re-tasked to convoy duties.  Task Force Ludlam has been given the mission to intercept them…

Table Set Up
Lightly wooded terrain with a road running north to south.  Small village to the west.

Task Force Ludlam

Background:
Intelligence have determined the route for a re-supply convoy belonging to Battlegroup Elwen.

Your Mission:
Ambush the convoy.  Destroy at least half the vehicles and secure a least 1 prisoner.

Forces At Your Disposal:
Light Infantry Platoon – Veterans (4 squads of 6 men in each  (1 x SAW, 4  x Low Tech Assault Rifle + GL, 1 x MAR)).

Special Equipment:
1.            Enough (dumb) mines for a strip 4” long.
2.            Electronic stealth cloaks.  Troops completely hidden when dug-in underneath them.  Discarded once that element fires/moves.
3.            Specialist ECM Operator (2 chits per turn).

Deployment:
Mines can be placed where ever you want.
Troops can be placed where ever you want (and can be dug-in).

Battlegroup Elwen

Background
:
After recent combat activity you have been assigned a less onerous task.  You are tasked to escort the re-supply convoy from 'Firebase Alpha B’ to ‘Strong Point Dredd’.  No enemy activity has been reported in this sector.  This is a ‘safe route’.

Your Mission:
One of the soft skins is carrying valuable fuel rods for grav vehicles.  This vehicle must make it off the north table edge.

Forces At Your Disposal:
Light Infantry Platoon – Regular (4 squads of 6 men in each  (5  x Low Tech Assault Rifle + GL, 1 x IAVR or SAW)
2 x 4 wheel high mobility scouts, 4 x Low & High Tech Grav APCs, 1 x Low Tech Grav Sled with Rocket Pack (no ammo), 2 x military trucks, 1 x Piranha APC, 2 x Hover sleds (unarmed and unarmoured).

Special Equipment:
One of the trucks is a HQ vehicle with some ECM capability (1 chit per turn).

Deployment:
Enter the sector from the South and exit on the North.  Vehicles are in column.

Umpire Notes:
The missions for both sides were not known until after the game.
Ludlum had intel and knew the strength and composition of the Elwenian forces.  They by contrast knew nothing about the ambush forces.
Elwen secretly picked the vehicle to carry the fuel rods.
The convoy vehicle sequence had to be decided before the game started,
The convoy could not depart the road until the ambush was triggered.
Vehicle convoy spacing was 10".

Pictures From The Game

Ludlam's troops spring their ambush knocking out the head of the Elwelian column.

Game Result
After an entertaining game, Task Force Ludlam managed to (just) grab a victory by achieving their victory conditions.

StarGrunt 40,000

Came across this interesting page today about a system for converting Warhammer 40,000 army lists into a format that will work well with the Stargrunt II rules system.  Worth a look: Link

15mm Sci-Fi Game - AAR

Umpired a 15mm Sci-Fi game at the Harrogate Wargames Club on Thursday night.  Gavin, Mark and Simon attacking against John, Mick and Chris in defence.  Rules used - FUBAR Expanded 15mm Sci-Fi.

The attackers had a Hvy Grav tank and 5 Walkers + 2 Armoured Inf Squads and 1 x Power Armour squad against the defenders 2 x Heavy Grav Tanks, a Armoured Grav Flyer, couple of scout vehicles and several squads of Inf with ATGW teams scattered amongst them.
-
(Walkers all by made by Critical Mass Games as are a couple of the tanks.  I Grav tank by GZG, as are most of the Infantry and wheeled vehicles. Flying Grav Jet tank by Blade Miniatures)
-

-
An engaging game with an early exchange of Railgun rounds seeing one of Gavs Walkers knocked out and one of Marks damaged (seen below with Railgun KO'd) .
-

-
A further exchange saw both Simon and Chris losing their Grav tanks with my new Walker 'Vera' in action for the first time.
-
'Vera' piloted by Jayne
-

-
Mark brought his Power Armour Infantry up through the wood (seen below) and along with the damaged walker chewed out the opposing Infantry and then jump-packed into the town.
-

-
Micks wheeled scout vehicles getting destroyed in the process as Marks armoured Infantry advanced as well.
-
-
Gavin chewed up some Infantry and then moved his other Walker up.
-

-
Johns reserve squad kept its head down amongst the rocks supporting the flying grav jet.
-

-
Gavin then jumped 'Vera' into close proximity to Johns surviving Grav tank, but this brave effort to breach the enemy line was in vain as John made his Initiative role and then destroyed her.
-

-
At that point we called an end to proceedings.  With regard a result, I judged a slight edge to be have been with Gav, Simon and Mark at the end.   A good game overall :)

Post game notes/thoughts:
1.  A slight tweak to the rules explaining Line of Sight (LoS) with regards to looking in and out of woods is required.
2.  The Infantry ATGW groups should have a +1 sight bonus to hit.

15mm Walker Distraction - 'Vera' Makes An Appearance

I'm meant to be focussing what modelling time I have available onto painting my 28mm Bruswick unit I posted about yesterday, but as is the way with wargamers, we get distracted...  In this instance I was looking at some 15mm Sci-Fi on the web and all of sudden felt inspired to build a Critical Mass Miniatures Walker I had picked up some two years ago at the Vapnartak convention.  Different from the four I already have, this one is an ARC Fleet Valkyrie variant which has jump jets on the back and a different arm arrangement.  Fortunately I had a bunch of rare earth magnets in my modelling box, so I've been able to articulate the movement of the torso, arms and chin weapon.
-

My son came up with the suggestion for the name, somehow it seemed appropriate :)

And when dissembled.

Picture Of The Week - No 41 - Zoid Cannon Tortoise

-
Comment:  This weeks picture is of a very old model I picked up off a Bring-Buy stall at a convention, probably over 20 years ago.  Fits great with 15mm Sci-fi figures.  The model in question is a Zoid Cannon Tortoise.  Currently thinking about using it in a game I'm planning as a 500mm Siege Mortar, that can fire a variety of shell types.

Picture Of The Week - No 40 - 15mm Sci-Fi Heavy Power Armour

-
Comment: This weeks picture is one of some of my favourite 15mm Sci-Fi figures from the old Laserburn range.  They are now obtainable from 15mm.co.uk.  In heavy Power Armour (Dreadnought), each figure has been modified to carry all manner of heavy weapons (as per the Forces of the Imperium - Imperial Commander supplement).
Working from left to right, Double Barrelled Heavy Bolter with Power Axe, Gatling Bolter, Double Barrelled Heavy Laser, Double Barrelled Heavy Bolter, Double Barrelled Heavy Bolter and finally Double Barrelled Missile Launcher.
The vehicle is a 15mm.co.uk Hover Scout Car.

15mm Sci-Fi - Ground Zero Games 8 Wheeler

Recently finished painting up a GZG V15-54A 8 wheeled support vehicle. I already have a few of this family of vehicles, so I continued with the same 'aggressor' camouflage pattern. I've used a rare earth magnet to secure the missile launcher. As well as allowing the launcher to rotate, depending on the mission it allows me to swap it for a Heavy Auto Cannon (a spare weapon from Critical Mass walker). A small counter-measures jamming pod (ball) has been added for good measure.

GZG 8 Wheeled MLRS

Further to my posting on 12 Nov, I've now assembled the vehicle and given it a base coat of grey primer.  I've slightly modified it by adding a HMG (or equivalent) just above the drivers station to provide some close in self-defence capability, along with a small ball sensor at the back.  I've secured the MLRS in place with a rare earth magnet.  This will also make it easier to re-role the vehicle to use in other roles, such as AA or AT.

Been Spending On 15mm Sci-Fi Again

Spotted a new version of the series of 8 wheeled vehicles that Ground Zero Games (GZG) manufacture.   This one has a Multiple Rocket Launcher on the back.  Couldn't resist it, so purchased on Sunday over the Internet, and it came today in the post :)

15mm Sci-Fi - Club Game - Objective: Take And Hold The APC

At the club last Thursday whilst some of our gaming chums tried out a 1/300th game of the new FoW Arab Israeli supplement, John Elwen and myself started a game of 15mm Sci-Fi.  We'd talked about it for weeks, and so were looking forward to the game.  I did originally have aspirations to pull together a detailed scenario, but pressures of work and family got in the way, so on the night we opted for a straightforward encounter game.  The objective for the night was to take and hold a broken down APC in the middle of the table which held important intel.
The rules for the night were our own expanded version of FUBAR in which we are also trying out three adjustments:
1. +1 to Activation roll if the unit failed to Activate on the previous turn.
2. Units on Guard have a -1 penalty to Hit.
3. New action called Overwatch. Acts the same as the Guard but with +1 to Hit. Troops don't need to re-activate to each turn.

We managed to get about 4 turns in before running out of time.  On the last turn of the night I managed to get my commander (in Dreadnought armour with a mini-gun) onto the objective, but his supporting squad was totally wiped out.

Vehicle of the night was a (Hammers Slammers) Blower Tank of John's that soaked up multiple hits that KO'd its main gun and inflicted so much damage on the skirts it was reduced to 1/8th speed.
The game still has some legs, so we are continuing this coming Thursday.
Here are a few photos.
