Operation ‘Platinfuchs’ Was an Early Nazi Defeat on the Eastern Front

The Soviet navy during World War II is perhaps best remembered for its vigorous role in the doomed defense of the ports of Odessa and Sevastopol in the Crimean Sea. However, in the Arctic north, the Soviet warships would have a major impact in the opening months of the war with Nazi Germany.

A ragtag fleet of destroyers and patrol boats, backed up by two stout-hearted rifle divisions, brought Hitler’s elite mountain troops skidding to a halt, preserving a vital supply line to Britain and the United States.  Link to the full article.

Heligoland, a tiny island that survived the second largest non-nuclear explosion in human history

'With 4,000 torpedo heads, 9,000 depth charges and more than 91,000 shells – all in all some 6,700 tons of explosives – set aflame, a 40-mile-tall black mushroom cloud rose above Heligoland and shook the island to its core. The detonation, a third of what had happened in Hiroshima two years before, was registered as far away as Sicily.'

Picture Of The Week - No 46 - Shermans

Comment:  This weeks picture shows a couple of WW2 British Shermans.  The one on the left being a Firefly, the one of the right being armed with a 105mm.  Main points of interest in the picture are:
a)   Track extenders fitted to assist with mobility over soft ground, and
b)   All the extra track hanging off the vehicles for extra protection.

Picture Of The Week - No 34 - 6pdr Anti-tank Gun Sight

A month back I was at an event on Ginkel Heath remembering Operation Market Garden and the British para drop.  Whilst there I saw this 6pdr AT gun, and got an opportunity to look through the sight. Found myself amazed at the simplicity and lack of any appreciable magnification !
